The Red Wings today have released their 2016 NHL Prospect Tournament Roster for the tournament taking place from Friday, September 16th to Tuesday, September 20th. The Red Wings team of 24 will face off against seven other NHL prospect teams in hopes of winning the Matthew Wuest Memorial Cup.
The roster is highlighted by five former first or second round picks. Evgeny Svechnikov who is heading into his first pro season with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League is the Red Wings 2015 first round pick. Second round picks include Tyler Bertuzzi, Givani Smith, Zach Nastasiuk and Filip Hronek. Bertuzzi- the 2013 second rounder- will be fighting for a roster spot on the Red Wings come training camp. Givani Smith earned high praise at the BioSteel Camp, especially by Wayne Simmonds. Smith was selected 46th overall in the second round of the 2016 draft. 2013 2nd rounder Zach Nastasiuk is still trying to figure himself out as a player, this season will be important for him in Grand Rapids. 2016 2nd rounder Filip Hronek will be playing his first season in North America with the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League.
Also playing an important part in the roster will be free agent signings defensemen Robbie Russo and Joe Hicketts, 2012 3rd rounder Jake Paterson, Dominic Turgeon and Dylan Sadowy who was acquired in a trade from the San Jose Sharks. Russo had 39 points and was plus 40 in 71 games during his rookie AHL season as a defenseman. He made the AHL All-Rookie Team and AHL Second All-Star Team at the end of his rookie season. Joe Hicketts led an underdog Victoria Royals team to the Western Hockey League playoffs. Hicketts will be looking to make the Grand Rapids Griffins roster. Dominic Turgeon, the Wings 2014 3rd rounder, will be in Grand Rapids for the 2016-17 season. He led the Portland Winterhawks to the WHL playoffs with 36 goals and 34 assists for 70 points in 72 games this past season before getting injured in the playoffs. Dylan Sadowy will also be a Griffin come the fall and will be a player to watch for Grand Rapids during the 2016-17 season. Jake Paterson will be the Red Wings number one goalie for this tournament and should be pressing for the backup job in Grand Rapids soon.
As a reminder, 24 players from the Red Wings roster this past season have skated in this tournament and are a part of the 522 players that have made the NHL after playing in this tournament. The seven teams taking place in the tournament will be the Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues.
