After 4 seasons as the captain of the Grand Rapids Griffins, Jeff Hoggan is trying out for the AHL’s Iowa Wild. The affiliate of the NHL’s Minnesota Wild released their training camp roster this past Saturday which included the former Griffin.
The 38 year old is one of 16 forwards skating for the Wild in camp. Iowa plays in the same division as the Griffins. The Wild will have two preseason games taking place on October 8th and 9th.
Jeff Hoggan, who was the oldest skater in the AHL last season, was regularly on the fourth line. He recorded 9 goals and 3 assists in helping the Griffins reach the playoffs for the fourth straight year. He played in 67 games during the 2015-2016 season.
The previous two seasons had identical stat lines where Hoggan scored 14 goals and had a total of 31 points.
Before the 2012-2013 season, the Griffins brought Hoggan in for a tryout and he was selected to be the team captain. He helped the franchise win their first Calder Cup championship. Hoggan scored 20 goals and has 45 points during the regular season and added 5 more goals during the playoffs.
The Iowa Wild are coached by former Toledo Walleye coach Derek Lalonde. Toledo is the ECHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings.
Grand Rapids and Iowa will play each other 8 times during the upcoming season. Below are the dates when the Griffins will face the Wild during the 2016-2017 campaign:
