The Griffins opened the season by defeating the Chicago Wolves 3-1.
Jared Coreau was a wall in net by stopping 27 of 28 shot by the Wolves. Mitch Callahan chipped in 2 goals. The Griffins won their first season opener since 2013 and their first home opener since 2011.
The Griffins will face the Wolves in a rematch this evening when they travel to Chicago for an 8 p.m. puck drop.
The first period was dominated by the Griffins as they outshot the Wolves 7-0 within the first 8 minutes of the game. The Griffins had seemingly scored a goal when defenseman Joe Hicketts fired in a slap shot from the left side but the refs quickly waved off the goal due to the net coming loose by a Chicago defender running into his own goalie.
But shortly after that, Kyle Criscuolo fired in a shot that Mitch Callahan tipped in for a 1-0 Griffins advantage.Tyler Bertuzzi was also credited with an assist.
Just 35 second into the second period, Anthony Mantha made it 2-0 Griffins when he fired a slap shot in from the top of the circles for a power play goal. Matt Lorito was credited with the helper.
Former Griffins Landon Ferraro help Chicago get on the board when he set up Brett Sterling who beat Jared Coreau for the Wolves lone goal of the night.
Mitch Callahan put the game out of reach when he scored an empty net goal with less than 20 seconds remaining. Although the Griffins won this battle, Chicago goalie Jordan Binnington turned in a solid performance by stopping 31 of 33 shots for the Wolves.
