Red Wings Game day preview: You Say Hello and I Say Good Bye

The state of Florida wasn’t too kind to the Red Wings at all. Thursday they saw a two goal lead evaporate in a loss to Tampa Bay, then Saturday the team was completely outplayed by the Panthers. Tonight they return to Detroit for their final home opener inside of Joe Louis Arena to take on the Ottawa Senators. The Red Wings looked slow and spent way too much time in their own zone, which was a problem last season. The defense will have to find their groove and seriously improve tonight. The Red Wings also have to maintain the pressure in the attacking zone. Too many times they fail to generate a sustained attack due to turnovers and looking lost out there. If they can reduce Mrazek’s workload by sustaining an attack in the Senators zone and the defense can pick up the slack, then Detroit will be in good position. One player who’s been performing well is Thomas Vanek. There’s been some questions about him on the team, however through two games he’s been playing some inspired hockey. Look for him to continue that trend tonight.

Ottawa is coming in with a 2-0-0 start. The Sens had to work extra hard by going into overtime and a shootout for their two wins. They overcame rookie sensation Auston Mattews 4 goals to beat the Maple Leafs in overtime 5-4 and then go to a shootout with Montreal to win that one. The Red Wings and Senators tend to have some pretty close games over the years. Last season the Wings were 3-1-1 in their meetings with the Senators.
