Recap: OTT 1, DET 5

Are you ready for your curly fries?
The Red Wings opened up their last home opener at Joe Louis Arena, facing the Seantors, looking to forget about the back to back games lost against Tampa and Florida. And they did so by getting another hatty in their opening night!

Mrazek gets his third start, and Andrew Hammond for Ottawa.

After the red carpet, and tribute to the arena and Howe, and announcing the roster – the puck dropped and the action started.

A fast pace broke out to start the first. Mrazek looked sharped again. Green gets a hooking call a few minutes in, giving the Sens the first powerplay.

The Wings would kill it off with allowing four shots, and big fight between Ericsson and Phaneuf, where Big E would win.

At 11:43, Mike Green would get his fist goal of the season over the shoulder of Hammond, assisted from Vanek and Nyquist. Only about 3 minutes later, Helm puts up a quick 2-0 with a break-away goal. Zetterberg made a beautiful pass and would get the assist along with Ouellet. Helm looks to be having a good year, already with his second goal and getting good chances.

Ottawa began a collapse when they were called for a hooking penalty. After Tatar nearly scores, Green would get his second of the night at 17:17 with a good snipe. Vanek got another assst, having 4 points in three games so far, looking to be promising.

The period settles down but Ottawa can’t seem to handle the pressure, they played scrappy with many turnovers.

To start the second, Wings needed to kill of a penalty, as they did. 3:27 in, Phaneuf heads to the box for a nasty hit on Athanasiou, but Wings would come up empty.

Wings were dominating most of the game with Mrazek playing well in the goal. After there should’ve been an interference call, Ottawa goes back to the penalty kill but for a hooking minor. Turris would get a short-handed goal from Dzingel and Karlsson, getting their first goal of the game, 3-1.

A few more chances for both teams, especially by Tatar who’s seem to be missing the net more then he’s used too. Ericsson got a scary looking cut on his forehead and left with his hand covering blood.

End of 2: Shots are 23-18 in favor of the Sens.

Wings start the third to finish killing off a weak called penalty on Green. Nothing too uneventful to end the game expect more chances, noticeably by Zetterberg.

Frans Neilsen was interfered with by Borowiecki, resulting in Sheahan coming to push him around and get his own call for roughing. Soon after 4 on 4 hockey, Abdelkader and Neil take a fight.

Green would get his third goal of the night with 6:36 to play, putting the Wings up by a strong 4-1 lead.

But after the Senators took another penalty, Helm picked up another goal!
Red Wings picked up their first two points with the final score of 5-1. Shots were 30-25 in favor of the Senators.

Overall, Mrazek had another amazing game and was sharp throughout. Helm, Vanek, and Green had big offesne nights, and Zetterberg and Tatar seem to be ready to join them.

Ottawa drops to a 2-1-0 record whereas Detroit gets their first, and big win of the season. Red Wings head to Madison Square Garden to take on the Rangers Wednesday night.
