The Grand Rapids Griffins were victorious last night improving their record to 3-0. This time they did it in comeback fashion.
Anthony Mantha had a big night with 3 power play goals. Mantha now has an AHL leading 5 goals on the campaign. Kyle Criscuolo score the game-winning goal with just under 4 minutes left in the contest.
Mantha is now the fourth player in Griffins history to score 3 power play goals in one game. The last player to do it was Tomas Jurco when he accomplished the feat last season vs the San Diego Gulls. Before that, Teemu Pulkkinen did it vs the Wild during the 2014-2015 season and the first player to do it was Joe Murphy in 2001.
This game marked the first time the Griffins would be facing their former captain, Jeff Hoggan. Hoggan scored the first goal of the game for Iowa. He intercepted a pass from Louis-Marc Aubry and scored on an unassisted wrister from the right circle.
Mantha tied the game at 1 on his first power play goal. Matt Lorito centered a pass from behind the goal line and Mantha was there with a point shot which found its way inside the left post.
The Wild took a 2-1 lead on a goal from Zach Palmquist. A pass from Grayson Downing from the bottom of the right circle found Palmquist who fired a shot that beat Jared Coreau on the short side.
Joel Eriksson Ek scored a power play goal to give the Wild a 3-1 lead with just over 30 seconds remaining in the 2nd period.
Mantha scored his second power play goal of the night when new captain Nathan Paetsch set him up for a shot from the right point that hit the crossbar and found its way in. That cut the Griffins deficit to 3-2.
With just under 9 minutes to play, the Griffins tied the score up at 3 when Mantha scored his third power play goal of the night, also completing the hat-trick.
Kyle Criscuolo scored his first professional goal which proved to be the game winner for the Griffins. Conor Allen sent a pass through the goal mouth, and it ended up finding Mitch Callahan. Callahan centered a pass on the edge of the goal crease and Criscuolo buried it in the open net for the game winning goal.
The Griffins were 3-for-6 on the power play. Coreau stopped 17 of 20 shots.
