Former Swedish Elite League goalie Lars Johansson was outstanding for Rockford stopping 27 of 28 shots while earning his first win on the season as the IceHogs topped the Griffins by a final of 2-1.
Rockford was out to a 2-0 lead before Anthony Mantha scored his 6th goal on the season.
The Griffins called a timeout with under 30 seconds left to play. They controlled the puck and peppered the Rockford netminder but came up empty as a shot from Mitch Callahan missed a wide open net from just inside the goal mouth as time expired.
The first period was wide open between both teams as nobody was able to really get any offensive momentum going. The score was 0-0 after the first 20 minutes.
During the second period, the IceHogs made it 1-0 10 seconds into their first power play on the evening. That goal broke a 0-10 power play drought for Rockford so far this season.
Rockford made it 2-0 on a breakaway goal by Martin Lundberg.
Mantha cut into the lead and spoiled the shutout bid for Johansson about half way into the final period. Matt Lorito was credited with the assist.
Jared Coreau was outstanding once again stopping 30 of 32 shots in the loss.
The Griffins will finish up the weekend by hosting the defending Calder cup champions, the Cleveland Monsters. The Monsters knocked the Griffins out of the post season in 6 games during the 2016 Playoffs. Game time is set for just after 7 p.m.
