Home sweet home! The Red wings are back on track with not only a 4 game winning streak, but with 3 of those wins coming on the historic Joe Louis Arena ice. Now, while there’s still 76 games left to be played in the 2016-2017 season, the Red Wings only had one 4 game win streak all of last season. Another reason why this streak is a huge statement.
In the home opener against Ottawa, I’m sure the 20,000+ Red Wings fans weren’t only nervous because of an 0-2 start, but itching to see them get that first win. Mike Green stole the show with his first career hat trick, and Darren Helm also notched 2 goals in the 5-1 win over the Senators. It was an emotional night at the Joe because it wasn’t only the last home opener ever at Joe Louis Arena, but they also honored the legendary Mr. Hockey who passed away this June.
Jimmy Howard got his first start of the 16-17 season at Madison Square Garden versus the New York Rangers, the city in which he was born. He had many friends and family in attendance for this game and completely stole the show, and the game at MSG. Despite the one goal allowed in the early stage of the game, Howard went on to make 32/33 saves. Goals from Tomas Vanek and Drew Miller was all it took to put away the Rangers in the 2nd win of a 4 game win streak.
P.K . Subban and former division rivals, the Nashville Predators, invaded HockeyTown and clashed for some Friday night hockey. It was a fast pace game in which the Wings and Preds found themselves deadlocked at 2, after 2. In period 3 the Red Wings broke out for 3 more goals coming from Tatar, Nyquist, and Darren Helm, both in which were firsts on the 16-17 campaign for Tatar & Nyquist. Some late pressure by the Preds made it a nail biter but the Wings stood tall and came out with a 5-3 win.
The second game in two nights, the reigning Western Conference Champions came into Detroit in which was the Sharks final game at Joe Louis Arena ever. Jimmy Howard was once again between the pipes trying to prove he is still capable of being a #1 goaltender. Gustav Nyquist netted 2 goals and Athanasiou helped his case to stay in the starting lineup by launching one top shelf on Jones to seal the shutout and a 3-0 win for Jimmy Howard and the Red Wings.
