The Griffins lost their second straight game as they were defeated by the Charlotte Checkers, 3-0.
Checkers goalie Michael Leighton stopped all 30 Griffins shots as he set an AHL record for shutouts with the 47th of his career.
The Checkers were aided by 4 power plays in the first period which led to 2 goals.
Valentin Zykov scored the first goal for the Checkers. Matt Tennyson was credited with the assist giving the Checkers an early 1-0 lead in the contest.
Derek Ryan gave Charlotte a 2-0 cushion when he scored on a redirected shot from Brock McGinn as time expired on a Colin Campbell penalty.
The Griffins pulled goalie Eddie Pasquale, who made his Griffins debut, with 2:30 remaining in the game. But Derek Ryan intercepted an Anthony Mantha pass that was intended for Nathan Paetsch and scored the empty net goal. Ryan’s second goal of the game gave the Checkers a 3-0 win.
The Griffins will play the next four games at home beginning Friday when they host the Iowa Wild. This game will feature Jeff Hoggan and Teemu Pulkkinen returning to Van Andel Arena, both in an Iowa uniform. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
