The Grand Rapids Griffins spoiled the return of former captain Jeff Hoggan and Teemu Pulkkinen by beating the Iowa Wild by a final of 4-1. Jarred Coreau was solid in net again stopping 30 shots for his fifth win of the season.
Hoggan and Pulkkinen played in the first game against their former team and received a warm welcome back from the fans as they were acknowledged during the first game timeout.
Evgeny Svechnikov got the scoring started for the Griffins. A Robbie Russo shot from the point deflected into the corner and Kyle Criscuolo won a foot race to the puck and fed Svechnikov who was on the door step and found the back of the net for a 1-0 Griffins advantage.
The Griffins took a 2-0 lead with under a minute left in the second period. Matt Lorito chased down a puck in the left corner and found Robbie Russo in the face off circle for his third goal of the season.
Grand Rapids scored again in the third period to make the score 3-0. Dominic Turgeon collected a shot that was knocked down then fired a low shot on net that deflected off of Colin Campbell. That was the first professional point for Turgeon.
The Griffins made it 4-0 with under 13 minutes to go in the third. Defenseman Joe Hicketts feigned a shot and then he found Matt Lorito at the bottom of the right circle who beat the Wild netminder.
The shutout bid was denied for Jared Coreau just 10 seconds later when the Wild scored their lone goal of the night.
For Coreau, last night was the 50th win of his AHL career.
The Griffins will host the Chicago Wolves this evening. Game time is set for just after 7 p.m.
