This morning the Red Wings placed Andreas Athanasiou on the Injured Reserve after he was diagnosed with a sprained knee. He’s expected to be out from one to two weeks. The injury occurred during the 1st period of the Wings 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks. With this move the Red Wings filled the roster spot by recalling Forward Anthony Mantha.
Some stats on Mantha coming from the Grand Rapids Griffins. In 10 games played. Mantha leads the team with 10 points off 8 goals and 2 assist with a plus/minus of 2. Last season Anthony Mantha was called up and had an immediate impact on Detroit’s struggling power play during their push to maintain a playoff spot.
While Mantha is lighting up the AHL with his scoring, there is some criticism with him as well. Mantha tends to be really lazy defensively and will take some plays off, which won’t fly with Blashill in the NHL. He’ll most likely play in the Top 6 but the drive will have to improve. Without a doubt Anthony Mantha is very talented and could provide a big boost for a struggling Red Wings offense, however he’ll have to earn a permanent spot on this roster as well as a top 6 spot with this team. We’ll see what impact Mantha can bring to this team.
