Griffins cough up 3 goal lead, win in overtime

The Griffins won a thriller last night over the Milwaukee Admirlas, 4-3. The Griffins gave up a three goal advantage but ended up walking away with the win in overtime.

Colin Campbell got the scoring started for the Griffins when he knocked goalie Marek Mazanec’s clearing attempt out of the air and fired a shot that found the back of the net.

Mitch Callahan scored on a Griffins power play for a 2-0 advantage. Callahan scored on a rebound from a Martin Frk slapshot.

Just 40 seconds later, Louis Marc-Aubry added another when his pass that was intended for Evgeny Svechnikov deflected off of Admirals Jack Dougherty and past a sliding Admrials goaltender for a 3-0 lead after the first period.

The Admirals had 19 shots on goal during the second period but Griffins goalie Eddie Pasquale, who was making his second start of the season, kept Milwaukee off of the scoreboard until Matt White was able to deflect a Kevin Fiala slapshot into the net for the Admrials first goal of the game.

Milwaukee cut the lead to just one when Adam Pardy scored on a wrist shot from the top of the right circle.

The Admirals pulled the goalie with 1:42 remaining in regulation. The move paid off as they  tied the game with 1:14 remaining in regulation eventually sending the game into overtime.

The Griffins came out with Ben Street, Robbie Russo, and Mitch Callahan to begin the extra frame. Grand Rapids won the game with 1:53 remaining when a failed clearing attempt by the Milwaukee goaltender was intercepted by Joe Hicketts. Hicketts sent a pass into the area of Tomas Nosek that glanced off of the stick of Fred Gaudreau and into the net for a 4-3 Griffins victory.

The Griffins improved their record to 8-4.
