The Griffins came out of the gate and controlled most of the game as they cruised to a 6-3 victory over the Texas Stars. The Griffins power play was 2 for 7 on the evening but they also gave up two shorthanded goals to the Stars.
Forward Matt Lorito had a big night for the Griffins by collecting 3 more points with his total now standing at 13 (5-8-13) on the season. The Griffins won their 10th consecutive regular season home game against Texas dating back to the 2013-2014 season and that includes five victories in Grand Rapids.
The Griffins scored on the power play for the fourth consecutive game when a Martin Frk shot beat Stars goalie Philippe Desrosiers from the left circle. It appeared that the shot may have deflected off of Mitch Callahan but replays determined that it did not and therefore Frk was credited with the goal and Matt Lorito had the assist.
Matt Lorito then added a goal to give the Griffins a 2-0 early into the first period. Lorito redirected a Robbie Russo slap pass from the right side that beat the Texas goalie.
The Stars got on the board due to a miscue by Jared Coreau. The Griffins were on a power play and Stars forward Ethan Werek beat Coreau in a race for puck and found the back of an empty net for a shorthanded goal. The score stood at 2-1 Griffins.
Matt Ford, who was making his Griffins debut, scored his first goal of the season on a slap shot from the left circle to reclaim the Griffins two goal lead.
The Stars made a goalie change bringing in Maxime Lagace to begin the second period. Texas responded by scoring another shorthanded goal on a Griffins miscue. Ben Street attempted to clear the puck in the Grand Rapids zone, but Travis Morin intercepted the pass and buried a shot that slowly went through the legs of Jared Coreau cutting the Griffins lead to 3-2.
Grand Rapids again responded as Tyler Bertuzzi scored on a shot that deflected off of Texas forward Remi Elie for a 4-2 Griffins advantage.
Colin Campbell scored his third goal of the season of off a rebound with Tyler Bertuzzi being credited with the assist. But Texas cut the lead to 5-3 when Bryce Van Brabant slipped a hard angle shot just between the post and Jared Coreau. But soon after that, Colin Campbell scored his second goal of the night from 160 feet away into the empty net for a 6-3 Griffins victory.
Jared Coreau earned his league-leading eighth victory on the season stopping 26 shots.
The Griffins will host the Stars again on Friday evening.
Just after the game, the Detroit Red Wings recalled Tyler Bertuzzi due to an injury to Darren Helm.
