The best part of a shootout loss is that a point is still rewarded to the losing team. But the Griffins may feel that the last two games are games where points were left on the table.
The Griffins had multiple opportunities to put the game away vs the Wild in overtime but fell in a shootout by a final of 4-3.
The Griffins had difficulty gaining any momentum offensively.
The Wild got off to an early 1-0 lead. Mario Lucia controlled the puck and passed it to Colton Beck, who hit the top left corner of Eddie Pasquale’s net for the goal.
The Griffins tied the game when Frk received a pass in a 2 on 1 from Matt Lorito and went top shelf on the Wild goalie. But Iowa broke the tie by scoring a power play goal when Pat Cannone put a shot past Pasquale from just outside the crease.
Iowa increased its lead to 3-1 when Hunter Warner’s shot from the right point was redirected inside the right post by the left skate of Brian Lashoff, who was tied up with Wild forward Nick Saracino in the slot.
Matt Lorito brought the Griffins back to within one on a breakaway goal for his eighth of the season.
With time about to expire in the game and Pasquale on the bench for an extra attacker, Frk scored his second goal of the night with under 10 seconds remaining sending the game into overtime. That goal happened to be on the power play which marks the tenth straight game where the Griffins scored on the power play.
Even though the Griffins found themselves on the man advantage in overtime, they were unable to score.
Eddie Pasquale stoned the first two shootout attempts by Iowa before they scored on their third try. Kyle Criscuolo, Matt Lorito, and Martin Frk all failed to score sending the Griffins to their second straight shootout loss.
Following the game, Tomas Nosek and Brian Lashoff were recalled by the Red Wings. They are not expected to play tonight when Detroit travels to Pittsburgh to take on the Penguins.
Eric Tangradi is expected to return to the Griffins lineup when they travel to Rockford to battle the IceHogs.
