Game Day Preview: Columbus vs Detroit

Gameday Preview Game 28

Columbus Blue Jackets (15-5-4) Preview: Here come the Blue Jackets. Who would have thought when this season started this team be so high in the standings? Right now they are in the third sport in the Metropolitan division and are playing pretty well, 7-1-2 in their past 10 games. John Tortorella looks to have finally figure out this team and has the correct chemistry as this team is rolling. Cam Atkinson is their points leader with 8-15-23 while Nick Foligno and Sam Gagner are respectively leading their team with 10 goals apiece.

For the Wings to win this game they must avoid the parade to the sin bin as the Jackets are first in the NHL with their PP at 24.6% (17/69). Crazy to think that a team coached by John Tortorella is leading the league on Power Play, however they are ranked 18th on the Penalty killed with 81.3% (12/64). Zach Werenski (Former Wolverine) is having a smooth transition from college level hockey to the show with a strong showing of 6 goals and 11 assists. It will be interesting how the Jackets play since they have been off since Monday, hopefully little rusty or sluggish. This team is coming along and thank heavens the game is in Detroit so we don’t have to listen to that cannon.

Detroit Red Wings (13-11-3) Preview: Bingo Bango, I’m back writing again, did you all miss me? So the Wings survived their latest road trip going 2-1 with a painfully lost in Pittsburgh, but rebounded nicely with OT win in Brooklyn and keeping their shoot-out record perfect by beating Winnipeg on Tuesday. Now, the Wings have their longest homestand of the season beginning with their old central division foe, the Blue Jackets. Finally a good sign for the Wings as reinforcements in the form of James Tiberius Howard, Andreas Athanasiou, and Alexey Marchenko are returning from their injuries. Tomas Nosek and Jared Coreau have been returned to GR. Howard will back up Mrazek tomorrow but I expect him to be in net on Sunday. Mrazek has played well enough to rebound from his rough stretch but I personally have not seen him emerge as the top choice in net. Henrik Zetterberg, the resilient Swedish Captain leads the team with 20 points (6 goals and 14 assists).

Tatar and Nyquist are still a disappointment in my eyes, but have no fear Anthony Mantha has come from “spare part comment” to first liner and huge part of this team’s offense. If he gets sent down once all injured players return i will personal jump into the Detroit River when I make my last ride at the Joe in February. The defense is still EH at best, I don’t want to get into too much since we have Lashoff playing over Sproul.

Special teams so far have been average at best with a lowly ranked 14.6% (13/89), good for 25th in the league, however the penalty kill has been impressive, with a league ranked of 9th in the league with 84.1% (13/82). The team better start on time or look, the Jackets are rolling and it could be one of those games where we suffer for 3 periods as the team gets steamrolled.
