Russo and Lorito named to AHL All-Star team; Nelson to Coach

The Griffins will have a good showing at this years AHL All-Star game. Matt Lorito and Robbie Russo have been selected to play in the game and will represent the Central Division.

Heach Coach Todd Nelson will join Lorito and Russo as Nelson earned the duties of the divisional head coach with the Griffins owning the top spot in the division as of December 31.

The game will be held January 29-30 at the PPL Center in Allentown, PA.

Each of the AHL’s four divisions will be represented by 12 players. Players were selected by AHL coaches and all 30 teams in the league will be represented by at least one All-Star.

Matt Lorito ranks among the league leaders with 22 assists (4th) and in points with 32 (6th). He is in his first year with the Griffins after spending last season with the Albany Devils where he led the team in assists (36) and points (54).

Robbie Russo is in his second professional season. The 23 year old defenseman leads the Griffins defense in scoring with 18 points (5-13-18) and also has a plus-six rating. He was a 4 year starter with Notre Dame and was the team captain during his senior year.

Head Coach Todd Nelson is heading to his first All-Star game as an AHL coach. Currently, the Griffins sit a top of the Central Division standings with a record of 22-9-1-2 which gives them 47 points. Their .691 winning percentage is the best in the Western Conference and third in the AHL behind the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

Former Griffin Teemu Pulkkinen will be joining Nelson, Russo, and Lorito as part of the Central Division roster.
