Griffins top Admirals 3-0

The Griffins power play continues to dazzle as they scored three times on the man advantage to shutout the Milwaukee Admirals for the second consecutive time, 3-0.

Overall, Grand Rapids finished 3 for 6 on the power play. The Griffins currently hold the league’s best power play efficiency at 28.6 percent. They also killed off five penalties.

Evgeny Svechnikov scored the first goal of the night for Grand Rapids. Robbie Russo connected on a one-timer that glanced off of Admirals goalie Marek Mazanec but Svechnikov was right there to collect the rebound and bury it for the early 1-0 lead.

Mitch Callahan scored to give the Griffins a two goal advantage. The Griffins were on the power play for only six seconds before Callahan buried his 11th goal of the season. Ben Street was credited with the assist. Callahan deflected a Street shot past Mazanec.

Milwaukee had chances to cut the lead, but the Griffins were stout on defense as they have been all season.

The Griffins took a 3-0 lead on Svechnikov’s second goal of the evening. Robbie Russo faked as slap shot before he slipped the puck to Svechnikov for a one-timer.

Milwaukee and Grand Rapids have had their fair share of rough, physical matches and this match up was no different. Robbie Russo was tossed from the game after receiving a major and a game misconduct after he slashed the legs of Vladislav Kamenev. Eric Tangradi, Kamenev, and Jimmy Oligny also were penalized for roughing. Oligny was also thrown out for continuing the mele.

Eddie Pasquale was marvelous in goal turning away all 31 shots from the Admirals. Milwaukee’s Mazanec stopped 25 of 28 shots.

The Griffins will travel to Rockford this evening to take on the Rockford IceHogs.
