The Detroit Red Wings are in dire need for help on the blue line in both facets of the game (Offense and Defense), while defenseman are hard to come by there is one that makes sense for the Wings to try and acquire. Shayne Gostisbehere of the Philadelphia Flyers is a defenseman who burst on the scene last season with 46 points in 64 games in route to a Flyers playoff berth. 2016-17 has not been so kind to the young defenseman out of Union College, he has just 21 points in 48 games played and is among the worst in plus minus among defenseman. He is a horrendous -19, while many of you don’t think the plus minus stat is that important it does show in how terrible “Ghost” has played this season. On top of everything else he will be a healthy scratch for the 3rd time this season which could make the former rookie of the year runner up available at a steep yet justifiable price.
So why would the Wings be interested in this Young scuffling defenseman?
Just by watching the Wings you would know that they are beyond atrocious at breaking the puck out of their own end, they are terrible at weathering a forecheck, and the powerplay might be the worst I’ve ever seen as they sit 30th in the NHL a whopping 11.4%. The Ghost would help help fix all three problems as he has a very respectable shot at the point (Something the Red Wings don’t have on the PP), he moves the puck extremely well, and he can light the lamp something that lots of Wings defenseman fail to do. Gostisbehere has struggled this season but here are some things that should be noted, He hasn’t played with very good defenseman, he hasn’t gotten the playing time that he did last year, and last of all he’s 23 years old in his 2nd year in the NHL remember folks young defenseman take a little while to develop this could just be a bad season…
With all of that being said what would it take to acquire him?
If the Wings were to acquire Shayne Gostisbehere from the Flyers the trade would have to make sense for both the present, and the future. As far as pieces to trade the Wings do have forwards Gustav Nyquist, and Tomas Tatar who have not lived up to expectations and like Gostisbehere could benefit from a new scenery. Other forwards that could be inserted in a deal as a lesser part could be Tomas Jurco who has played just 13 games since coming back from injury, and Riley Sheahan who has not scored a goal this season. As far as I’ve seen most trades with defenseman include one in this case Ken Holland has a few who he could deal most notably Ryan Sproul who has just 6 points in 21 games he has not consistently seen ice time because of the fact he cannot go back down to Grand Rapids without waivers. In addition, the other two that could be possibly dealt are Brendan Smith as he is a UFA (Unrestricted Free Agent) at the end of this year, and Mike Green, who has been the Wings best defenseman this year but with this year and next left of his contract the Red Wings could go in another direction as the Wings start to turn this roster over. Finally, the Wings have 3 possible goalies to deal but as we all know the numbers have to work out and for both sides the trade has to make sense for both the Flyers and Red Wings.
