Jonathan Ericsson’s season is done. Detroit’s General Manager Ken Holland confirmed that the 32 year old Swedish defenseman will have season ending wrist surgery next week.
Ericsson sustained the injury during Thursday night’s 6-3 loss to the Capitals. It was soon discovered that Ericsson suffered a fractured wrist after being hit into the boards by Niklas Backstrom during the first period.
The loss of Ericsson likely won’t be a huge hit given the teams performance defense wise, but it will now allow the younger defensemen to get some valuable ice time. Detroit could also call up a defenseman from Grand Rapids to get a good look at them.
