Game Day Preview: A Little Too Late

It’s game day, Hockeytown! Tonight, your Detroit Red Wings take on the visiting New York Islanders for their third and final meet up of the regular season. With that being said, this will be the Islander’s final game ever at Joe Louis Arena. The Wings are looking sweep their series against the Islanders as they are 1-0 both away and at home.

Detroit Red Wings (24-25-10)

The Detroit Red Wings are coming off a huge 2 wins against two of the best teams in the East, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals. If the men in red and white can pull off a win tonight, they will go into their bye week on a three game win streak. Although the Wings have been playing a better game then they have previously this season, the team is still eight points out of a wildcard spot and they would need to win 19 of their next 23 games to match Philly’s 96 points that pushed them into the final Wildcard spot last season. At this point in the season, it looks like the playoff streak will officially come to an end. Although it is nice to see the team playing how we know they can, the push for the playoffs may have came a little too late this season, but only time will tell.

Forward Frans Nielsen will see some familiar faces tonight on his home ice as he plays his former teammates and closest friends including Islander’s captain, John Tavares. The two were reunited in Los Angeles on January 28th for the All-Star game and then again when the Islanders lost to the Wings on February 3rd.

The Wings have had no problem scoring against this team this season. In their first match up, the Red Wings netted 4 goals and in the second they scored 4 and then a 5th with only minutes left in the third period. Petr Mrazek started in net for both of those games and will start in net tonight per Red Wings beat writer, Ansar Khan.

Mike Green has missed the past two games with a stomach virus but skated morning warm ups and announced that he is healthy and ready to go.

Red Wings Point Leaders:

  • Henrik Zetterberg (45 points)
  • Thomas Vanek (37 points)

New York Islanders (27-21-10)

The other team in this match up is not only starting a franchise record 9 games road trip but the team is 7-13-4 on the road and has lost their last three games away from the Barclays Center. The Islanders are a team stuck in the middle of the race to claim the final playoff spot and are only 2 points out of it as of right now.

Cal Clutterbuck was sidelined on February 3rd with a day to day lower body injury but the nagging injury kept him out for longer than expected, 10 games to be exact. On a happier note for New York, Clutterbuck will return to the line up tonight in Detroit. Thomas Greiss will start between the pipes for the away team.

Islanders Point Leaders:

  • John Tavares (49 points)
  • Josh Bailey (39 points)

Islanders Projected Lineup:

The Islander’s lineup has not been released but Doug Weight did announce that the same D pairings that were used during the win in New Jersey will play tonight. 13 forwards took morning skate at Joe Louis Arena and one will sit with the return of Clutterbuck.
