The Griffins are in the Lone Star State again to take on the San Antonio Rampage for the fourth game during their seven game road trip. So far, the Griffins are 2-1 winning the previous two games.
Grand Rapids knocked off the Rampage 4-2 on Friday before beating the Texas Stars 5-2 the following night. The Griffins dominated the third period of both games. They were tied 2-2 on Friday before scoring two goals in the final frame to beat the Rampage. And Saturday, the Griffins were again tied with the Texas Stars 2-2 before scoring three times including two empty net goals to win 5-2.
Jimmy Howard will start the final game of his second two game rehab stint for the Griffins. He is 2-1 in three starts for Grand Rapids.
Howard will join Mitch Callahan and recently recalled defenseman Robbie Russo who will make his NHL debut this evening when the Red Wings take on the Toronto Maple Leafs. Russo will become the 161st Griffin to play in the NHL.
Even though Grand Rapids will be without Callahan and Russo for tonight’s game, Martin Frk and Tomas Nosek will both return to the lineup. Nosek has been out for the previous three games with a concussion and Frk missed the Griffins previous game against Texas with the flu. Frk has points in six consecutive games and is the team’s leading goal scorer.
The power play for the Griffins struck again on Saturday collecting two more goals during the win vs the Stars.
Grand Rapids remains at the top of the Central Division at 37-16-1-2 and behind only San Jose for the top spot in the Western Conference. The two teams will battle it out on Saturday night in San Jose.
The Rampage have been struggling as of late dropping 11 consecutive game and have found themselves at the bottom of the Pacific division standings.
