On May 2nd, the Detroit Red Wings signed goaltender Matěj Machovský to a one-year contract for the 2017-2018 season. It is probably safe to assume that not many people know too much about Machovský or who he even is for that matter. Hopefully after reading this article more people will know about the young goalie from the Czech Republic.
Born July 25, 1993, Matěj Machovský is a 23 year old goaltender from the Czech Republic. His professional career started in 2013 playing for HC Plzeň of the Czech Extraliga, the highest-level ice hockey league in the Czech Republic. During the 2013–14 season, as a rookie, Machovský led the Czech Extraliga in save percentage (0.936), alongside a career-best 1.67 GAA and six shutouts.[i] In the 2015–16 season, he posted a personal-best 26 wins and ranked eighth among goalies who played in 25-or-more games with a 2.43 GAA, and finished third with a 0.920 save percentage. This past season, Machovský had a 2.25 GAA, 0.925 save percentage, and two shutouts.
Matěj Machovský attended the Red Wings’ development camp in July 2016.[ii] While at the camp, Machovský must have caught the eye of some of the Red Wings’ scouts which eventually lead to the team signing him. There has not been any word as to what this means for the Wings current goalie situation, but Winged Octopus will make sure that everyone stays up to date when more information is found out.
