The Grand Rapids Griffins will kick off their season long Calder Cup Championship defense when they open up the regular season at home on October 6th against the Manitoba Moose. The franchise’s second Championship banner will also be raised on opening night. It will mark the 22nd season for the franchise, the 17th in the AHL and 16th as the primary Minor League affiliate if the Detroit Red Wings.
The Griffins will play 76 regular season games, 38 and home and 38 on the road. Out of the 38 home games, 25 of those games are on either Friday or Saturday. There will be two Sunday late afternoon games on November 5th when the Milwaukee Admirals pay a visit and on February 25th when the Iowa Wild come to Grand Rapids. The annual New Year’s eve home game will also be on a Sunday evening against the Admirals. The ever popular winning Wednesday promotion will return. If the Griffins win at home on Wednesday, the next Wednesday home game is FREE. There will 10 home Wednesday games this season.
On October 21, the Hershey Bears will make their first trip to Grand Rapids in almost 12 years. The last time the Bears were in West Michigan was on December 22, 2005. The Griffins will travel to Hershey on March 11.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins will visit the Griffins on March 2nd for the first time since 2008. Grand Rapids will head to Pennsylvania on March 10th.
The Griffins will host the Tucson Roadrunners for the first time on October 25. The last time the Griffins played a team from Arizona was in 1997 when they battled the Phoenix Roadrunners of the IHL.
The first rematch of the Western Conference Final will be on October 13 when the Griffins travel to California to do battle with the San Jose Barracuda. Grand Rapids will host San Jose on March 30.
Grand Rapids will host their annual matinee game on Wednesday November 8th when the San Antonio Rampage come to town. The game will begin at 11 a.m.
54 of the regular season contests will be against Central Division opponents. 18 games will be against the Pacific and 4 will be against the Atlantic Division.
The longest homestand of the season will span over six games from February 21 until March 3. The Griffins will have two five game road trips spanning from November 10-18 and also March 31 to April 12.
Grand Rapids will also have a series of three games in three night four times during the campaign. The first set will be from December 8-10 and then again from December 21-23 and also on March 23-25.
