This segment of Griffins Summer Spotlight will highlight young defenseman, Filip Hronek.
Hronek broke into North America playing with the Saginaw Spirit last season and also won the team MVP. The Rookie joined the Griffins for the stretch-run of the regular season and was even in the lineup for two Calder Cup playoff games against the Chicago Wolves. He was also named to the OHL All Star team.
The Red Wings drafted Hronek 53rd overall in 2016. He and fellow defensive youngster Vili Saarijarvi are vying for time to lead the Griffins power play for the 2017-2018 season.
Hronek was able to score a goal and notch an assist with a plus-1 rating in 10 regular season games for Grand Rapids. During his campaign with the Spirit, Hronek scored 14 goals and had 47 assists in 59 games.
The Czech native is a 6-foot, 165 pound hard nosed defenseman. Hronek helped the Griffins win a big game during the stretch run of the regular season. The Griffins were in a shootout against the Charlotte Checkers and once former Goalie, Tom McCollum. Hronek scored the winner in the shootout helping the Griffins top the Checkers 2-1. See the goal below.
Filip had never played in North America until this last season. The ice surface is a little bit smaller and Hronek seemed to make the necessary adjustments in order to succeed in the North American style game of hockey.
