As the pre-season ends, teams are starting to shape up their opening night rosters. The Red Wings made a few roster changes on Sunday afternoon by placing a few players on waivers.
All players who are waived have 24 hours to clear. If they are unclaimed then they will be reassigned to AHL affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins. Goalie Tom McCollum, who was waived on Saturday, cleared waivers and was assigned the Griffins. Defenseman Joe Hicketts, who impressed during the pre-season, was assigned to Grand Rapids. Hicketts could be the first call up should the Wings experience an injury at defenseman. Axel Holmstrom, Dylan Sadowy, Dominic Turgeon, Dan Renouf, and Vili Saarijarvi were also sent down to the Griffins.
Keep an eye on goaltender Jared Coreau. He showed some inconsistency during his time in the NHL last season; however he played a huge part in the Griffins Calder Cup run. A team, like the L.A. Kings, looking for a backup goaltender could place a claim on him before noon of Monday.
Detroit also reassigned their first round pick in this year’s draft in center Michael Rasmussen to Tri-City of the WHL. They also released PA Parenteau, Matthew Ford, Collin Campbell, and Dominik Shine, who were all on a player tryout during the pre-season
