Good afternoon hockey fans! In case you were out last night, you missed some breaking news regarding AA. TSN’s Bob McKenzie tweeted out that Andreas Athanasiou was flying overseas to start skating with the Swiss team, HC Lugano. Apparently Athanasiou plans on assessing his options once he arrives in Switzerland.

AA is still an RFA, who has had an offer from Ken Holland prior to the start of this season, but AA and his people stated AA needs more.

According to The Athletic’s Craig Custance, Ken Holland met face to face with AA at the start of camp in Toronto.

Back in early August, AA’s camp told the Wings that the KHL made an offer to Athanasiou; they were hoping to use the KHL as leverage in striking a better deal with Ken Holland. Obviously, it didn’t.

During the Wings first home preseason game, FSD spoke with Holland in regards to the whole AA soap opera. KH told FSD that he will not negotiate with the KHL, he said he made his offer and the rest is up to Athanasiou and his camp.

There’s no argument that Athanasiou is and will continue to be one heck of a player; his speed is among the best in the league. However, fans need to also remember he has only a year and a half of NHL experience under his belt.

There have been rumors that AA has a big ego, that he’s hard to coach, that he has attitude problems. If these rumors are in fact true, then it makes sense as to why the Red Wings aren’t moving mountains to solidify AA’s roster spot.

AA is not our saving grace, he is however a key piece to the puzzle that is the youth movement here in Detroit. But, AA needs to realize that Larkin and Mantha and even Frk, they’re ready to take the reigns for this movement.

Athanasiou can either swallow his pride and play the game he loves for an organization that thrives on class and excellence, or he can go overseas and make a name for himself that way and kiss his days in a Winged Wheel goodbye.

Winged Octopus will continue to keep you informed on the latest AA news, stay tuned.
