Earlier today, the NHL released the full list of players attending the 2018 All Star Skills Competition and Game. Tampa earns the nod to host the annual event, starting on January 27th and 28th.
Representing for Detroit is Mike Green, his second All Star appearance and first for the Red Wings.
Green, 32, is in his 13th NHL season and 3rd with Detroit. He leads the Wings defenseman with 24 points (4 goals and 20 assists) in 41 games this season, which ties for 19th among NHL defensemen. He’s a leader for time on ice at 22:39 per game.
He also has put up 13 power-play points, 84 shots on goal, 48 hits, and 44 blocked shots. Additionally, he’s produced six multi-point games this season, including the first game at Little Caesars Arena when his 4 assists propelled a Detroit 4-2 win.
Joining him in the event are fellow Atlantic division players Nikita Kucherov, Auston Matthews, Aleksander Barkov, Brad Marchand, Jack Eichel, Victor Hedman, Erik Karlsson, Andrei Vasilevskiy, Carey Price and Steven Stamkos.
Shifting to the Metropolitan, the players selected are Alex Ovechkin, Taylor Hall, Sidney Crosby, Josh Bailey, John Tavares, Claude Giroux, Seth Jones, Noah Hanifin, Kris Letang, Henrik Lundqvist and Braden Holtby.
Moving to the Western Conference, Patrick Kane, Nathan MacKinon, Blake Wheeler, Brayden Schenn, Eric Stall, Tyler Seguin, P.K. Subban, Alex Pietrangelo, John Klingberg, Pekka Rinne, and Connor Hellebuyck will appear for the Central division.
Lastly, looking at the Pacific. Connor McDavid, Johnny Gaudreau, Brock Boeser, James Neal, Rickard Rakell, Anze Kopitar, Drew Doughty, Brent Burns, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Jonathan Quick and Marc-Andre Fleury will be in attendance.
There are some noticeable names that were snubbed. For Detroit, a case could be made for Dylan Larkin to return, having a much-needed bounce back season with 34 points after a sophomore slump. Jimmy Howard has also put up numbers respectable for consideration.
More omissions/replacements include Patrice Bergeron, Charlie McAvoy, Frederik Andersen, Tuukka Rask, Mikhail Sergachev, Anders Lee, Shayne Gostisbehere, Sergei Bobrovsky, Jakub Voracek, Phil Kessel, John Carlson, Cory Schneider, Jamie Benn, Vladimir Tarasenko, Patrik Laine, Roman Josi, Ryan Suter, Jonathan Toews, Sean Monahan, John Gibson, Mark Giordano, Jake Muzzin, Mike Smith, William Karlsson and Jonathan Marchessault.
While is future as a Red Wing is still unclear, getting the fun opportunity to represent your team will be an entertaining weekend to pay attention too at the end of the month.
