Mid Season Player Grades

The Redwings have crossed the halfway marker and its time to grade the players. As a team, the Wings have struggled during the first half, but some players have given it there all. Blashill needed players to take the next step this season. It’s safe to say a good portion of them have brought there playing styles to another level.

Henrik Zetterberg who is the Wings captain earned a B from me through the first half. The only reason why he didn’t earn an A- is because his goal numbers are down and his faceoff percentage is below 50 percent. Henrik has been fantastic dishing the puck. He has tallied 24 assists so far. In addition, captain Z has the most discipline with only six penalty minutes. No one will ever question his leadership and discipline as a player.

Dylan Larkin is one of the players that needed to take the next step. I give Dylan an A for his performance this season. This is because Larkin has really grown into being a center. Larkin deserves the best grade on the team because he leads the team in points, and has the best faceoff percentage. Overall Larkin is just a workhorse. He will do anything for the team. Larkin will go and kill a penalty, make the extra pass, and will use his speed all over the ice. All signs are pointing to him to be the next great Red Wing.

Jimmy Howard who has gotten the most playing time as a goalie earned an A-. Jimmy Howard is 14-13-6, but goalie wins is an irrelevant stat and doesn’t say the full picture. Jimmy has been fantastic this season with a 915 save percentage and 2.68 GAA. These numbers are spectacular with the defense that has been laid in front of him some games. Unfortunately, Howard has a lower-body injury and is being cautioned.

Anthony Mantha is another player that made a lot of improvements as a starter this season. He earned an A- for his performance this season. Mantha really took a leap in scoring. Anthony leads the Wings in goals scored at 15. He has used his big frame more which was a much-needed improvement from last year. The Wings struggled with the power play last year, but this year, Mantha has boosted it with six goals and 9 total points with the extra man.

These are only some of the player grades, but the most important ones. It will be interesting to see how these grades change in the second half. Even though the Red Wings are out of the playoff race the players still need to show they can play and be a contributor next year. Here’s a list of some other player grades.
