Keys to the Off-Season

As we all know the Red Wings season has been over for awhile now, and the NHL season is almost over. Therefore the off season will be an exciting time for Wings fans. In my opinion this is one of the most important summers for this franchise in a long time. The first priority is the draft by far! The Red Wings have the sixth overall pick and 11 total 2018 draft picks. If Adam Boqvist were to fall to sixth overall I’m sure fans would be ecstatic including me. Plan B would have to be defensemen Quinn Hughes who went to the University of Michigan. He would have potential to make the roster next fall due to a poor defensive unit in Detroit.

Another key is clearing cap space via trade. Personally, I’d look to trade Gustav Nyquist who only has one year left on his deal. In addition they need to move Darren Helm because of his three year deal costing almost four million a year. Then Andreas Athanasiou would likely need to be dealt. He is a restricted free agent again this year because the Red Wings and him were only able to reach a one year deal last year due to a disagreement. If the Wings aren’t willing to pay him they better get something in return for the young speedster.

Ken Holland also has to figure out how to extend Dylan Larkin, Anthony Mantha, and Martin Frk. The salary cap is not favorable for Holland and the front office. As of now they have just over 17 million in cap space this year. I would love to see Holland lock up Larkin and Mantha for multiple years at a good price. I’d sign Frk to a two year deal which would let him develop his slap shot even more. These next couple of months are going to be very interesting.
