Late last night, the Detroit Red Wings addressed the log jam they have defensively by trading Defenseman Robbie Russo to the Arizona Coyotes for a 2019 seventh-round draft pick.
Russo played in 19 games for Detroit during the 2016-2017 season. Last season, he had nine goals and 23 assists while appearing in 75 games for the Griffins. He has spent much of the previous three seasons in Grand Rapids.
He was signed by the Red Wings as a free agent before the 2015-2016 season. He was originally drafted by the New York Islanders in 2011, but they did not reach an agreement on a contract. Russo played collegiate hockey at Notre Dame.
The Griffins will have seven defensemen under and NHL contracts next season in Joe Hicketts, Dennis Cholowski, Brian Lashoff, Filip Hronek, Libor Sulak, Dylan McIlrath, and Vili Saarijarvi. The Griffins will also have Marcus Crawford and Trevor Hamilton under AHL Contracts. Dan Renouf is a restricted free agent.
